JMU Math BuildingHarrisonburg Virginia is located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. It is the County Seat of Rockingham County and home to James Madison University and Eastern Mennonite University.

Harrisonburg was named after Thomas Harrison who set up a homestead in the Valley and claimed more than 12,000 acres as his property. Harrison gave two and a half acres to the public to build a courthouse in 1779 and gave the public 50 more acres in 1870.
