Agreement to Reduce Animals Deaths at the RHSPCA Reached

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

An agreement was reached between the Shenandoah Valley Spay Neuter Clinic and the Rockingham / Harrisonburg SPCA to lower the number of pets put to death by 20-percent.

The Spay & Neuter clinic had previously requested funds to set up it’s own animal shelter, citing the high kill rates at the RHSPCA– which held the dubious honor of having the highest kill rate of any state funded facility. Sixty-eight percent of all animals given to the shelter were euthenized in 2008.

Meetings will continue between the two parties in order to hammer out details of the agreement.

Update on the South Main Wachovia Bomb Incident

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

old time cartoon bomb

The Harrisonburg Police Department are still investigating the bomb threat / incident that occurred yesterday at the Wachovia Bank on South Main Street. They now think there could be two additional people involved.

The suspect that was taken into custody yesterday has claimed that two unidentified men kidnapped him with pistols on Rex Road in Harrisonburg. He went on to claim that he was forced to withdraw money from his bank account or the device that they had taped to him would explode.

A search warrant executed by police shows that a meat cleaver, duct tape, wipes, a trash-bag and a cellphone have been seized from a house on Rex Road. Police were also spotted seizing a computer earlier this morning.

In case you are not familiar with the story, Monday at around 9:15 am, the HPD responded to a report of a man going into the bank with what looked like bomb taped to his back. All bank employees were able to evacuate the building and nobody was hurt. The bomb was actually a fake and was detonated by officers from the bomb squad. The surrounding area was swept and no other devices were found.

No charges have been filed in this case and those with any info about this case should call the HPD (Crime Stoppers) at 540-574-5050.

UPDATE: 11:30 AM
There is indeed a hostage situation at the Wachovia Bank branch in Harrisonburg. A reporter from WHSV saw police removing a man with an objected taped to his back. The Police are asking the public to avoid South Main. It is currently blocked off from Mosby Rd. to South Avenue.

11:20 AM
1700 Block of South Main Street in Harrisonburg is closed as police respond to an incident there; avoid the area if possible. I have heard reports via twitter that there may be a person with a bomb or saying he or she has a bomb. I have also heard reports that all of route 11 is closed as police appear to be searching for somebody.
