where did all these flies come from?

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

superfly jimmy snukaOk is it just me or has Harrisonburg become overrun with freaking flies? I walk outside and I can see hundreds of these nasty little buggers all trying to sneak into the house and contaminate everything with their nasty fly germs.

I tried making a fly trap out of a jar and some pancake syrup. I figured the flies would smell the syrup and fly in the jar and get stuck. But no these flies aren’t even smart enough (or perhaps they are too smart, kind of like Raptors) to go after free food. I guess I will go out later and get some kind of spray.

Harrisonburg Residents with Un-Shoveled Sidewalks Receive Warnings

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

snow_car
The Harrisonburg Police Department has issued written warnings to residents that have snow-covered sidewalks. Those residents that don’t comply will be cited and face fines to the tune of $200. This post would probably be longer if I actually had a sidewalk outside my house and was more upset about the latest example of The Man Keeping us Down. I guess eventually somebody will get hurt by slipping on ice or have a heart attack and file a lawsuit. They will probably get a nice little settlement and the city will stop the madness.

For those who want to help shovel, you can contact the Police Department @ 540-432-2600 and they will tell you where to shovel.

DNROnline.com – Better than Springer

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

When I have too much free time on my hands, I like to browse the Daily News Record website.  I don’t read many of the articles, I just look for the most popular ones and read the comments.  This is good, cheap fun…like watching reality shows on VH1, it’s one of those things that makes you feel like a better person by comparison.  Last week’s article about a toddler in Stanley who was run over by a woman in SUV incited such a riot that they shut down commenting due to policy violations before noon!

Topics likely to start a flame war:

  1. Anything involving gangs or drugs, especially if there’s a Hispanic-sounding name mentioned in the article
  2. Backyard chickens.  This one attracts commenters from all over the country!
  3. Heritage Oaks Golf Course, particularly since the DNR always finds a way to mention that this public course is not profitable, even when the topic is the course’s First Tee program.

Taste of Downtown: August 18, 19, 20

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Taste of Downtown is an annual event sponsored by the Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance that gives you a great excuse to eat out in the middle of the week.  Several locally-owned restaurants in the downtown area participate by adding a featured special to their menu that shows off the best their kitchen has to offer.  The best part is that you get to eat good food for at a great price.  Favorite choices:

  • Joshua Wilton House has a $35 three-course meal that includes a glass of wine.  Call ahead for the day’s menu and reservations.
  • Cally’s does a selection of appetizers, entrees, desserts and a tasting of microbrews for $20.  Last year, this won the ‘holy-cow-that’s-a-lot-of-food’ award.
  • Jack Brown’s – If you haven’t tried it yet, now’s the time.  $10 for lunch or $12 dinner.  Kobe beef burger, fries, beer…what else is there?
  • Artful Dodger has a $10 entree and cocktail special.
  • For lunch, check out Clementine’s ($6 soup & griddle), Smokin’ Pig ($5 BBQ meal), Old Dominion Coffee ($7 wrap and drink) or Cally’s ($8 BBQ platter).

I plan to take full advantage of this opportunity to skip cooking.  Awards will go to the restaurants for most food, best deal, biggest surprise and I wouldn’t eat it if it was free.

Check out the HDR website for full details.

Tractor Trailer Crashes into JMU Dorm

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009
Rockingham Hall @ JMU

Rockingham Hall @ JMU

This is amazing. On Friday, a Lincoln struck a semi in on the south bound lane of I-81, both vehicles crossed the median strip. Some how the truck managed to travel up the embankment and strike the old Howard Johnson’s Motel on Port Republic Road. The old Motel is now owned by JMU and is used as a dorm for students. Thankfully the building was unoccupied.

The Lincoln’s driver was seventy-nine year old, John Wodecki from NY. He was charged with reckless driving. I’m thinking the Wadecki must have been driving a Lincoln Town Car, one of the few cars on the road that is capable of taking out a big-rig.  The driver of the semi was taken to RMH to be treated for serious injuries related to the crash.

The physics of getting the truck all the way from the South Bound lane and into the dorm are quite baffling to me. The building is at least 200 yards from the north bound lane. I wish somebody had gotten this on video.

Even More about Chickens

Chicken Update

They are delicious….

Foghorn Leghorn logo

Actually Harrisonburg City Council voted to allow chickens in the city, providing the owner has at least two acres or more. So basically there wont be many people that can have chickens. I hope this has been resolved once and for all, frankly there are more important things that we should be focusing our attention on. Health Care… that’s a good one.  How about the drive by shooting that happened on Monday? On the Daily News Record’s site there were 48 comments on their chicken story and only 30 on the shooting. It’s now official- farm animals are a bigger story than people getting shot….

Alas… it is not over yet. There will be yet another chicken vote next month. The only good thing that came out of all of this is a quote by Nancy Garber:

She said, “Chickens in backyards are just as illegal as marijuana plants.” I’m thinking the police and the judge would beg to differ.

I have smelled enough chickens in Harrisonburg to last a lifetime.
