    • — Nov 11, 2010: Klezmer Ensemble at Old Cabell Hall

      The University of Virginia Klezmer Ensemble under the direction of Joel Rubin will perform with special guest composer/clarinetist Michael Winograd on Thursday, November 11th, 2010 at 8pm in Old Cabell Hall.

      Michael Winograd is perhaps the leading voice of the younger generation of performers and composers within klezmer, Yiddish and ""New Jewish Music"". Besides his own groups (Michael Winograd Klezmer Ensemble, Infection), he performs regularly with klezmer hip-hop artist Socalled (in residency at UVA Apr. 12-15, 2010), Yiddish cabarettist Daniel Kahn, Frank London's Klezmer Brass All-stars, Budowitz, percussionist Kenny Wollesen, singer Ayelet Gottleib, and Shtreiml, among others.

      Winograd (http://www.michaelwinograd.com/), will be in residency at the University of Virginia for the week. Highlights of the residency will be his performance with the UVA Klezmer Ensemble on Thursday, November 11th, and his performance with Yiddish Princess on Sunday, November 14th.

      Under the direction of Director of Music Performance and acclaimed clarinetist Joel Rubin, the University of Virginia Klezmer Ensemble focuses on the music of the klezmorim, the Jewish professional instrumentalists of Eastern Europe. The ensemble is made up of both undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and other members of the greater Charlottesville community, and is dedicated to exploring klezmer and other Jewish musical traditions from the 18th century to the present.

      Tickets for the Klezmer Ensemble with Michael Winograd are $10 for the general public, $5 for students and free for UVA students who purchase tickets at least one day in advance.     • — Nov 7, 2010: Jazz Chamber Ensembles at Brooks Hall

      The Jazz Combos at the University of Virginia present a free recital on Sunday, November 7th at 3:30pm in Brooks Hall Commons. The Combos are taught by distinguished jazz performance faculty members Pete Spaar, Jeff Decker and Mike Rosensky. The combos range in size from quartets to octets and vary in skill-level from intermediate to advanced. Repertoire is chosen from a diverse range of jazz styles by such greats as Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, Antonio Carlos Jobim, among many others, as well as origninal compositions by both faculty and students.

      Besides a formal concert at the end of each semester, the jazz combo groups do several outreach performances in the Charlottesville community, and give a final end-of-year celebration concert, ""Jazz in the Amphitheater.""

    • — Nov 6, 2010: Choral Showcase at Old Cabell Hall

      The traditional Family Weekend Choral Showcase will feature the UVa University Singers, UVa Chamber Singers, Virginia Women’s Chorus and Virginia Glee Club in concert on Saturday October 6th, 2010 at 7:00 pm in Old Cabell Hall. The concert’s lively and varied program will feature selections from all four ensembles’ 2010 repertoire.
      The Virginia Women’s Chorus is conducted by KaeRenae Mitchell, the Virginia Glee Club is led by conductor Frank Albinder, and the University Singers – and their select subset, the UVa Chamber Singers – are directed by UVa faculty conductor Michael Slon.     • — Oct 29, 2010: University Singers at Old Cabell Hall

      The McIntire Department of Music presents the University Singers under the direction of Michael Slon on Friday, October 29th at 8pm in Old Cabell Hall on the historic lawn of the University of Virginia.

      Founded in 1957, the University Singers is UVA’s premier SATB ensemble, performing a cappella and accompanied choral literature ranging from chant to the works of contemporary composers. Past repertoire has included Handel's Messiah, Orff’s Carmina Burana, the Brahms Requiem, Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, and Mozart's Mass in C minor, as well as shorter a cappella works. Students in the University Singers come from UVA's six undergraduate schools, including Arts and Sciences, Education, and Engineering, as well as several of the University's graduate and professional schools. Together, they enjoy an esprit de corps that arises from the pursuit of musical excellence and the camaraderie the singers develop offstage.

      Active as a conductor of choral, orchestral, and operatic repertoire, Michael Slon is currently Conductor of the University Singers, Chamber Singers, and recent Interim Conductor of the Charlottesville & University Symphony at the University of Virginia. Slon serves as Assistant Professor of Music at the University, while remaining active as a guest conductor of honors choirs and orchestras. Prior to UVA, Mr. Slon served as visiting conducting faculty at the Oberlin Conservatory, and as assistant conductor of Cincinnati's May Festival Chorus. He is also a pianist and writer - his first book Songs from the Hill came out in 1998.

      Tavia Nyong'o is associate professor of Performance Studies at New York University. His research interests include the intersections of race and sexuality, visual art and performance, and cultural history. He is the author of The Amalgamation Waltz: Race, Performance, and the Ruses of Memory (University of Minnesota Press, 2009), which investigates musical, aesthetic, and political practices that conjoined blackness and whiteness in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

    • — Oct 22, 2010: Free Bridge Quintet at Old Cabell Hall

      The University of Virginia McIntire Department of Music presents an evening of Jazz with the Free Bridge Quintet on Friday, October 22nd 2010 in Old Cabell Hall on the historic lawn of the University of Virginia.

      The Free Bridge Quintet is the official faculty jazz ensemble of the University of Virginia’s McIntire Department of Music. Free Bridge features Jeff Decker on saxophones, Robert Jospe on the drums, Wells Hanley on piano, Peter Spaar on bass, and John D'earth on trumpet and flugelhorn. The group released their first CD, “Spanning Time,” in 2000 and has recently released a live recording of their concert “For the Record,” consisting of new original music by the band. Their concerts are known for the wide range of music performed. Anything is fair game for this versatile group, from New Orleans-style to hard bop, from Afro-pop to Hip Hop. The group also performs their own inventive and intricate compositions.

Professor Will is author of The Characteristic Symphony in the Age of Haydn and Beethoven and of articles and reviews on 18th- and early 19th-century music. The popular professor is also interested in 20th-century American popular music, especially country music and bluegrass, and hosts a bluegrass jam session for UVA graduates and undergraduates. He has received fellowships from the American Philosophical Society, the German Academic Exchange Service, and the American Musicological Society."
